Why 9 months instead of 10

Im begining to wonder why many assume women are to carry babies for 9 months instead of 10. I wish we cud just say 10 months cos the moment ur 9 months pregnant( thats 36 weeks) everyone starts to wonder why u have not popped yet and look at u with so much pity. I cant count how many times

i tell people its 10 months not 9.. I know we all count by calender months but seriousl;y... who re we kidding?
